The fairway duel of the legends: Stars of the Legends Tour go stroke-by-stroke against top players of the Ladies European Tour
Schwerin/Vorbeck – The successful tournament format goes into the next round! From 20 to 22 September 2024, professionals of the Legends Tour will once again compete against the best proettes of the Ladies European Tour over-45s. After the success of last year’s “Battle of the Sexes” on the challenging WINSTONlinks course, spectators can expect an even more exciting duel between the genders this time around.
The competition on the men’s side is filled with high-calibre players. Last year’s winner Scott Hend will be joined by Stephen Dodd, WINSTONgolf Senior Open winner in 2018 and winner of the Senior British Open Championship in 2021. Paul Wesselingh (2014), Andrew Oldcorn (2016), Phillip Price (2017), Clark Dennis (2019) and James Kingston (2021) are other winners of the popular tournament in this year’s field. Germany’s Thomas Gögele and Sven Strüver, the Austrian Markus Brier, and André Bossert from Switzerland will also be highly motivated to compete for the coveted title.
Concentrated female power meets strong men
In addition to three players from last year – Elisabeth “Lisl” Esterl, Patricia Beliard and Catrin Nilsmark – England’s Rebecca Hudson and Italian golf legend Stefania Croce have now also confirmed their participation. This promises even greater excitement and more intense competition – a highlight for spectators, who will be able to watch the ladies compete with the men.
Elisabeth Esterl from Germany is already looking forward to her second participation: “I’m thrilled to have been invited again this year. The atmosphere at WINSTONgolf is simply unique, and I’m looking forward to competing against well-known players from the Legends Tour once more. I can hardly wait!” Tournament Director Stefanie Merchel is proud of the continuation of the mixed format: “The fact that we were able to add more lady players to the event shows how well this special playing format has been received. Spectators can look forward to an exciting weekend in which the ladies will hopefully once again provide the decisive drive. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for the ladies!”
Tournament mode: The Dunhill format
The tournament is played in the Dunhill format, over three rounds without a cut. Teams of two, each comprising one pro together with one amateur, will play on Friday and Saturday. The sixty pros will compete amongst themselves in the final round on Sunday. Joint scoring across all three rounds ensures an exciting and direct comparison between the genders. Of the total prize money of EUR 450,000, the winner will receive a cheque for EUR 67,500.
A golfing event for the whole family in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
Admission is free on all three tournament days. Golf fans will have the opportunity to experience golfing stars up close - whether on the driving range or directly on the course.
Ample free car parking is available. There will also be plenty of refreshments and exciting experiences away from the green: As the main sponsor of the tournament, bicycle manufacturer Kalkhoff in its promotional truck will be presenting the latest e-bike models, inviting visitors to try them out and to linger a while.
This year’s venue: the outstanding WINSTONopen
Renowned golf architect Dipl.-Ing. Holger Rengstorf designed the 18-hole WINSTONopen championship course on an area of 110 hectares with great attention to detail. This parkland course, extending over 6,305 metres, is characterised by the rolling hills of the local terminal moraine landscape, and offers both scenic beauty and a sporting challenge.
For its 20th anniversary in 2022, this challenging course underwent a careful redesign of its bunkers. Sand hazards were reduced from 80 to 49 through targeted, well thought-out interventions. These changes have significantly increased the playing enjoyment of WINSTONopen for golfers of all abilities. The green of hole 16 was also relocated in 2023. The new position, which allows for more air circulation and incident light, has decisively improved the quality of the green. With these continuous optimisations, WINSTONopen is an outstanding course that meets the highest standards.
