Van Phillips triumphs after a thrilling playoff
Schwerin/Vorbeck – For a long time it looked as if Phillip Archer (ENG) would win this year’s title, but three bogeys on the last four holes brought him another playoff on the WINSTONopen Course. He was joined in the playoff by Adilson da Silva (BRA), who moved up the leaderboard with a strong 64, and Van Phillips (ENG), who also finished on 12 under par for the tournament, with rounds of 70, 66 and 68.
In the end, it was Van Phillips (52) who secured his first Legends Tour title on the 4th extra hole. After three consecutive pars on the 18th hole by all three players, a precise birdie on the 10th decided the playoff in Van Phillips’ favour. The latter said he was particularly relieved, as he had only slipped into the field belatedly: “It’s incredible. The past few years were really tough. I’ve battled through injuries, and it’s just fantastic to win and vindicate all the hard work. It’s simply marvellous!”
Tournament director Stefanie Merchel looks back on the WSO tournament week with satisfaction: “The final today was a worthy conclusion to our family tournament. The players gave their best once again, and were able to enjoy the special atmosphere in glorious weather. I am also very proud of my dedicated team, who worked with great commitment behind the scenes to ensure that the tournament once more ran smoothly and at the highest level. We are already looking forward to next year, when we will once again be able to experience exciting days of golf.”
